Vent Your Anger - Page 18 Empty Re: Vent Your Anger

Post by Pedro Sun Mar 02, 2008 7:12 am

I don't know the source, but here is what I read:
Code:
A material that is able to self-repair even when it is sliced in two has been invented by French researchers.

The as-yet-unnamed material - a form of artificial rubber - is made from vegetable oil and a component of urine.

The
substance, described in the journal Nature, produces surfaces when cut
that retain a strong chemical attraction to each other.

Pieces of the material join together again as if never parted without the need for glue or a special treatment.

This remarkable property comes from careful engineering of the molecules in the material.

The
French researchers are already making kilogramme quantities in their
Paris laboratories and say the process is almost completely green, and
could be completely so with a few adjustments.

[i][b]'Tiny hands'[/b][/i]

The secret of the substance lies in how the molecules are held together.

A
piece of normal rubber, says Dr Ludwik Leibler, who headed the
research, is actually a single molecule with billion upon billions of
smaller units chemically welded together to form a giant tangled
network.

Children are always breaking their toys. Wouldn't it be nice if you could put them back together so easily?

The
elasticity comes from the fact that the strands within the network are
buckled like a concertina: pull on them and they straighten and
elongate; let go and the buckles reappear.

But break a rubber (or most other solids), and the chemical welds - known as covalent bonds - are also broken.

These cannot be remade. Nor can a piece of rubber be remoulded or reshaped.

"We
wanted to see if we could make a rubber-like material using small
molecules," Dr Leibler of the Industrial Physics and Chemistry Higher
Educational Institution (ESPCI) in Paris told the BBC's Science In
Action programme.

The trick was to replace the covalent bonds in rubber with weaker connections known as hydrogen bonds.

These are like hands on neighbouring molecules that can clasp together, but let go when broken.

Dr
Leibler quickly realised that this meant not only that the new rubber
could be recycled and remoulded many times over, but that if separated
by a cut or break, the chemical hands at the fresh surfaces would still
be waving about ready to bind again.

[i][b]Child's play[/b][/i]

François Tournilhac, who runs Dr Leibler's laboratories, demonstrated the healing to me.

Using
a razor blade he severed a thin strand of the yellowish material (the
colour of corn oil), showed me the clean square faces, and then pressed
them together.

Almost immediately, the grip was strong enough for him to hold the sample just at one end.

Within
an hour the bonds had rebuilt themselves so thoroughly that it was
possible to stretch the strand to twice its length without any sign of
weakness where the cut had been made.

One obvious use, says Dr Leibler, is for self-healing seals.

Puncture a seal in a compression joint with a nail, and the hole would automatically repair itself.

He also has more playful suggestions.

"Why
not use it to make children's toys? Children are always breaking their
toys. Wouldn't it be nice if you could put them back together so
easily?"

The material was developed with the support of the
French company Arkema, which is already investigating whether it can be
turned into a commercial product.

I actually don't mind high school, or school at all. I have nothing better to do with my time and it's where I see my friends 99% of the time. I should have just said "teenage drama is gay".

Good luck with the whole prom situation though.

Thats pretty damn good. Its amazing what people are inventing these days.

And i loved high school. Mainly because i was with my mates almost every day of the week and it was just a laugh. Granted all the work was gay, but other than that, i really enjoyed my time at school.

Most people do. I somehow got seperated from most of my friends after elementary school, and the friends I made at my new school never blossomed into full-fledged freinds. Essentially, I was a loner for the better part of grade 9 and some of 10th grade. I made a lot of new friends that year via downtown shows and the likes. So, I have my group of close friends, none of whom go to my school. I have some fun casual friends at my school, but these aren't people I hang out with outside of school.

Yeah. There are a few people from my school that I get along with really well, but most of them are just casual friends. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to spend much time there. I would have switched schools to one where I had more friends, but my friends seem to be scattered throughout different high schools, and a lot of them are out of high school now. Oh, well...I'm almost done. I'll get to go to college with my good friends, and I imagine that will be better.

I'm excited for the new friends aspect. I love meeting new people. I think the fact that I never really clicked with the people at my school has to do with the fact that I was occupied with my other friends, and thus blocked them out. I don't know...my philosophy teacher explained it to me once haah.

I have 1 really good friend that I hang out with outside the "family" enviroment. The rest of our friends are all family units, you know, married with kids, like me and my wife. It's cool tho, we get along with these people really well.

Those scare the the hell out of the 18-year old me... E.g. my cousin has a husband and two kids. I really like them, but when they get together with their family unit friends, they freak me out. Like, they play volleyball on every single Sunday. It's creepy.

Still... I hope my life will be as well-maintained and systematic as theirs when I'm 30.

we're not that bad, we get together with 3 other families about once a month, make dinner, or have a cookout. The kids play, the wives sit around and talk, and the husbands (3 of us are into metal, the other 1 is just starting to get into some metal), stand/sit around listen to music, drink beer, play video games, shoot the breeze, etc. In the spring, summer and fall we have a big ass bonfire.

Took me a long time to get to where I am with friends, I used to be really shy, and the bullying at my first school didn't really help me that much(although now I get along with the people from that school when I see them. Then there was secondary school..or high school you some of you I guess, made some friends, and started to be less shy, but still getting bullied, which sucked ass...I couldn't control my temper, so they knew they could get a rise out of me. It wasn't really until last year, when I was living with three guys that I was friends with in secondary school, and this other guy that was always making fun of me (but he did it to everyone, he is quite funny) one of the friends became an ass, and started hanging out with some gimpish indie guys...because they were cool, but the other three I am really good friends with now, I am quite happy that I am not shy anymore, it really helps with the whole having fun and the like, I can talk to people easier now, and just not really give a shit about most things
